Artist l Woodworker l Sculptor l Digital Collagist

Georgina Lingard is a sculptural artist working in woodwork, metal, and found objects. She imagines the Artist to be a conduit, the process an act of ritual, and thereby, artwork an offering of something earnest.

For Lingard, this offering presents itself as an emotive display of craftsmanship, functionality and worship. Recent works, Vestige Machina and Codex Machina, explore this unusual intersection between the sacred and the industrial, or rather the handcrafted and the mechanical. When the forging of skill encounters the desire to create and awakens within the artist a purpose to pursue.

Drawing from forgotten tools, obsolete machinery, and arcane ritual objects, Lingard’s work manipulates the symbolic charge of materials into relics of unknown belief systems. These sculptural amalgamations speak in tandem with the workshops that ignite their creation; screws, chucks, and callipers excavated from the site of making and offered up in a new light of worth.

In acknowledging the artful act as a conundrum known most intimately to the maker, Lingard, stages her installations as fragmented machines we ourselves cannot place, despite attempt. They speak to the remnants of purpose, the ache of loss, and the need to ascribe meaning to the objects we create and leave behind.

Making becomes activation, a uniquely human ritual wherein the residue of purpose lingers, undeciphered yet sacred.
